The California Dept. of Justice and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency have joined the LAPD's investigation of Michael Jackson's death, specifically to assist in examining the complicated laws and regulations governing doctors' use of powerful prescription medications that may have contributed to the 50-year-old pop singer's death.
The DEA, through what is known as 'The Diversion Control Program', has the authority to investigate the doctors involved.
The CA Dept of Justice has also become involved in the case as well, according to CA Attorney General Jerry Brown. The State of California maintains a database called C.U.R.E.S. that tracks all prescription medications, the patients and what doctors prescribed them. The database is a useful tool in any investigation involving prescribed medications and their possible abuse and misuse. The CURES database was a crucial tool used in the investigation of the overdose death of actress and model Anna Nicole Smith. Two doctors and Nicole's longtime lawyer friend Howard K. Stern were charged and are facing criminal charges for allegedly supplying Smith with prescription medicines illegally in that case.
The involvement of the DEA and CA Dept. of Justice in the case signals that investigators are attempting to track Jackson's medication history and find out which doctors were prescribing what medications, for what reason, before Jackson's sudden death last week.
Although so far in the Jackson case, no cause of death had been determined, allegations of prescription drug abuse have swirled around the case.
Jackson was at home by his personal physician Dr. Conrad Murray last week, suffering from cardiac arrest and later died at the UCLA Medical Center after repeated attempts to restart his heart failed.
So far just who the doctors are that treated Jackson remains somewhat of a mystery. Jackson has been treated by many doctors over the years and up until his time of death.
The Enterprise Report has confirmed at least four doctors who have been involved with Jackson in recent years.
Dr. Conrad Murray
Cardiologist
Dr. Arnold Klein
Dermatologist
Dr. Stuart Finkelstein
Internal and Addiction Medicine
Dr. Deepak Chopra
