Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck accepted free tickets to attend the 2010 Academy Awards The Enterprise Report has learned.
Chief Beck, newly hired in November of 2009 after the departure of former Chief William Bratton attended the event with a female guest on March 7, 2010.
In response to questions LAPD spokeswomen Mary Grady issued a terse brief written statement to TER earlier today regarding Chief Beck's attendance at the event. TER first requested the information beginning late last week. Additional follow-up questions to LAPD's Grady were not responded to prior to publication of this story.
"In regards to your question as to if Chief Charlie Beck attended the Academy Awards, yes he did. The Chief will report it when he files his ethics forms with the city and state. The Chief will pay for the cost of the tickets if there is any and it is required."
The Chief attended the awards with a female guest and was photographed with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and his date for that evening KTLA-TV personality Lu Parker. The photos were taken at an Oscar party that took place that same night.The Enterprise Report has obtained and reviewed photographs depicting Mayor Villaraigosa, Los Angeles TV personality Lu Parker and Chief Charlie Beck and his companion posing together.
LA Mayor Villaraigosa has come under intense media scrutiny in recent weeks for his acceptance of free tickets to a variety of events since he took office in 2005. Official ethics investigations into the legality of his actions have been launched by the city, county and state.
