According to top American administration officials, a U.S. air-strike has killed U.S. born Islamic cleric Anwar al-Awlaki in Yemen. Despite previous claims, proven wrong that Awlaki had been killed in 2009, this time officials say the former San Diego and Virginia based cleric has in fact been confirmed killed by U.S. forces.
Yemeni government sources say the attack was carried about by a U.S. drone. Another American citizen, Samir Kahn, a U.S. citizen from North Carolina, who assisted al-Awlaki in producing an english language online magazine called "Inspire" designed to incite Islamists to attack the United States was reportedly also killed in the attack.
Al-Awalki, has been directly linked to the 9-11 terror attacks, having been the Imam at a San Diego area mosque in 2001 when he met repeatedly with members of the 9-11 terrorist attack. Despite that he was never arrested and was allowed to leave the United States in 2002. Based in Yemen ever since. That is where U.S. counter-terrorism forces have been searching for him.
More recently al-Awlaki was linked to the Christmas Day 2009 failed plot to blow up a Detriot bound airliner and the Fort Hood Massacre which was carried out in November 2009 by a Muslim U.S. Army Major Nidal Malik Hassan.
